Description

This was completed a few months ago to add to my portfolio.I had never painted mermaids before and didn't want to give them the same tired look. These (I hope) are a little more frightening to the viewer, saying "never come down here".Sketched, scanned, and painted entirely in Painter 7.

Awesome take! You've done a wonderful job transforming these beautiful creatures into something a little more mysterious and fearful..

The mermaid in the foreground seems a bit comical to me - just in the way the mouth is done... but the 2 background interpretations are quite disturbing.

Love the choice of colors and darkness to this piece...

great work!

great job..great concept;)
only one small crit would be to put more effort into the hair...seems a bit too sloppy;)

 05/04/06 @840

Scary! I like the way you did her mouth, nice touch, the way you've handled the hair underwater is cool.

The one pointing doesn't look as good as the others, and some more light refraction from above would give it more depth.

Nice work and welcome back buddy!

The one in the foreground is quite creepy, I like it a lot. A few critiques though: on both Mermaid's eyes on the left/shadow side look slightly too flat, even for the lighting. Also as murky as that water is the lighting would probably drop off a lot quicker than that, so the Mermaid in the background would be significantly darker. Lastly the Mermaid in the middleground doesn't look as finished as the one in the foreground. But other than that, great job, good concept.

It is something different and to be applauded.

For me the two main figures vie with each other for attention...it's probably that pointing hand, which, whilst nicely realised, detracts from the foreground head..or maybe it's the other way around...I'm not sure...it just feels that this would be a better painting if it was about EITHER the pointing hand OR the screaming head...not both!

The pointing mermaids body is also a little vague...would have been nice to see as much attention paid to that as you did the hair...which is beautiful.

Overall though..very nice.

sheesh. Scary, and well done! These are really nicely designed, and different. I think the hand does get a little lost when you have that beautifully done big scary mermaid so close. I do like the fact that its in there, so I wouldn't change it. Its like an extra added surprise that apears just after the initial shock of that big creepy face.

Okay, as I scrolled down for the first time I got really shocked by the mermaid in the foreground.
Good work!

every now and then someone comes along and takes an existing concept and puts an entirely unique spin on it - and blows everything else away!

i'd like to say that this is one of those pieces.

absolutely awesome work :)

I agree with  Cigaro about the hair and GFXartist sponsor Kaduflyer about not having the two basic poses at the same time. Personally I love to have this with just the pointing figure.
Like Gary said, "great depiction" :)

I think you should go through all the old concepts and recreate them! You've done a really good job on this picture Jeff, very good work. It's not too difficult to introduce shock factor into an image, but to get a picture to look this disturbing is a great deal more difficult. This reminds me of the kind of freakish things I see in my nightmares.

I agree with  Asche's comment about the visibility through what appears to be fairly murky water, but I have just one more thing to add.....bubbles!! Floating particles, itsy bitsy creatures floating through the water, and bubbles! This would have added an extra dynamic to what is already a very cool picture.
The only other areas that could use improvement are where it seems you haven't put quite as much effort in as you have the other areas. In this case, I would say the hair and the distant hand/arm of the middleground mermaid could use more touching up, though this is minor.

Overall great work Jeff, well done on a very disturbing and original concept! ^_______^

Different alright and creepy. the mermaid in the foreground looks a bit more like a vampire, which to me;) makes it a tad tooooo different. LOL, still a nice nocept and good work.

Concept:

Strong

Technical Skill:

Strong

Impact/impression:

Strong
Pros:
I really like the faces, they look pretty evil
The pointing pose works very well too
The grubby green colourscheme give a good feel of murky water
The expression of the face in front is great
Cons:
Somewhat blurry in areas such as the bottom left corner, maybe a filter can enhance the blurriness to make it look less "unfinished" now it look a lot like random stroke
The underwater feel could be a bit stronger, maybe by adding bubbles, and some slight blurriness/bubbles or clouds moving over the pointing mermaid.
Overall opinion/feedback:
Except some blurry areas a real nice artwork
Maybe it's worthwhile to experiment with brushstrokes/blending modes to make the strokes more varies and combat blurry areas
